There are multiple benefits of training hard and getting big and strong but in this sequence from Pumping Iron, Arnold discusses one that isn’t normally talked about. (^_^)
In a recent post, I mentioned Dave Draper as a bodybuilding great. Dave also known as the Blond Bomber competed primarily in the mid to late 60′s and won the Mr America, Mr World and Mr Universe titles. He also competed in the Mr Olympia. He has also written a number of books including Brother Iron, Sister Steel. Still active today, Dave is truly a bodybuilding great.
I was training yesterday and noticed an older guy (probably in his 60′s) training relatively heavy. Although his technique left a “little” to be desired, I had to give him credit. That is until I saw his seated press behind the neck in the smith machine – that made me wince. I am not a fan of the smith machine but given the limitations in equipment in the gym, it is an option. (I train in the only gym in the town I live in Japan and machines dominate.) The press in question included a bounce off the shoulders, in which the guy’s shoulder girdle dropped several inches with a simultaneous partial hip and knee extension. Add to this the amount of back movement the action required , it was all in all a scary technique. As I have written before some cheat movements are fine but not at the expense of your body.
