Gourmet Nutrition

You know that it is sometimes hard to get motivated about your eating plan, often eating the same thing day in day out. With this in mind I started looking at what cookbooks were available for the guy or gal who wants to get big and strong. My pick – Gourmet Nutrition by Dr. John Berardi and Dr. John Williams.
Don’t worry, the gourmet part of the title relates to the taste, not how hard the recipes are to prepare. The book starts by outlining Dr Berardi’s rules of good nutrition (you really should look at applying these) and then goes into the first section on setting up your gourmet kitchen which includes what foods you should and shouldn’t stock at home.
The second section are the recipes themselves. There 100 of them and each includes a nutritional breakdown. How do some of these sound?:
Breakfast
- Mexican Frittata
- Oatmeal Apple Pie
- Protein Pancakes
Chicken & Poultry
- Moroccan Chicken
- Tex-Mex Chicken & Rice
- Hawaiian Pizza
Seafood
- Seared Sea Scallops in Spinach Cream Sauce
- Pecan-Crusted Salmon
- Tuna Burgers
Beef and lamb
- Peppered Sirloin with Ground Onions and Balsamic Vinegar
- Greek Burger
- Broccoli Beef Stir Fry
There are also Soups and Stews, Side Dishes, Bars and Snacks and Shake recipes.
If you feel a little out of your depth with the whole concept of cooking, the book has a number of cooking tips to make the whole process easier.
I really like this book, although if you live outside the US like myself, you might have to put a little work into finding some items. Also it is important to be aware that the eating pattern suggested by Dr Berardi is low carbohydrate except post training, so you might find this a bit of a shock if you generally eat a lot of bread and pasta throughout the day.
All in all Gourmet Nutrition is one cookbook that should be on your bookshelf. You can purchase it by itself here or it also comes as a part of Dr Berardi’s great Precision Nutrition package.
